Serum City: The New Web3 Game Where Mutant Apes Reign Supreme with ApeCoin-Powered Gameplay

Novel Labs and Mutant Cartel founder Lior Messika have announced Serum City, a new Ethereum NFT game that ApeCoin, its primary in-game currency, will power. Serum City is set in a dystopian world where Mutant Apes are considered second-class citizens, and the ruling class are the Bored Apes, based on the lore developed by Messika and Mutant Cartel over the past 18 months. Serum City will be a city-builder game where Mutant Apes are the main characters and owners of the Mutant Ape Yacht Club (MAYC) NFTs, along with Bored Ape holders and owners of Novel Labs’ own derivative Genesis Oath and Mutant Hound NFT collections, will have access to the game.

Owning one of those NFTs is required to play Serum City at launch, although the game will gradually open up access with each new in-game season of content. Serum City will continue and expand upon Mutant Cartel’s lore, and the game’s aesthetic will be “illustrated” or comic book-inspired. While not many gameplay details have been shared, Messika has stated that Serum City will be a richer and more appealing play experience, unlike many of the early NFT-based games, which he believes are too simplistic and not that fun.

According to Messika, the reason why a lot of games have not reached the kind of adoption that they had hoped for is that many of them are not that deep. To address this, Serum City will be designed to offer a more engaging and immersive experience for players. In addition, the game will also enable players to create their own stories and game assets and buy in-game currencies like gems using ApeCoin.

Serum City’s assets will be on Ethereum’s mainnet, making it possible for items crafted in the game to be transferred and used in future Novel Labs games. The Faraway Developer Platform also opens up expanded interoperability down the line, with plans for “cross-game and cross-universe events” once Serum City launches in August. Messika states that Novel Labs “didn’t need to check in” with Yuga Labs, the creator of the Bored Ape Yacht Club NFTs, given the license tied to Bored Ape and Mutant Ape NFTs. Serum City is a great example of what permissionless innovation really looks like, and Messika is proud of that fact.

While Mutant Apes are considered less valuable or prominent compared to Bored Apes, Messika is leaning toward that feeling of being an outcast among outcasts and turning it into Web3 gaming lore. Serum City will be one of the few NFT collections that will provide owners access to the game, and Messika hopes to create a richer and more engaging experience for players than other NFT-based games that are available. Serum City will be a game where players can create their own stories and game assets, buy in-game currencies like gems using ApeCoin, and transfer items crafted in the game to be used in future Novel Labs games.
