Owning Pets in Virtual World
By Vishakha Thakur
Do you own a pet or are planning to keep one in future?
Pets can make your life interesting, just like the virtual world. But can you own a pet in the virtual world too?
The answer is Yes.
Let’s explore how.
One can not only perform various activities in the virtual world but also, buy an entire home.
And, in this home, you can keep a pet too. The options for pet ownership are countless whether it is owning a pet or being a part of a virtual pet show.
Interestingly, you can not only own a pet but also customise your pets.
Imagine owning a tiger or crocodile as a pet. It might sound odd but that’s possible in the virtual world.
You can customise their appearance and make them talk to you.
Advancements in technology such as the advent of blockchain has made owning pets possible.
If you think that the concept of virtual pets is new, it isn’t so.
However, the virtual component creates new dynamics. Virtual pets, unlike real pets, can be accessible at any time and from any location, making them especially tempting to persons with hectic schedules or those who are unable to care for a live animal owing to physical or financial restraints.
Virtual pets give constancy, predictability, and quick pleasure, delivering emotional comfort without the obligation that comes with having a live pet.
What are the advantages of owning pets in the metaverse?
There are numerous benefits to keeping a virtual pet, even if some people find the concept of pet ownership in the metaverse weird. Pet ownership in the metaverse provides a unique and rewarding experience that includes companionship, education, and entertainment. As technology advances, we may expect to see even more innovative and exciting opportunities for virtual pet ownership in the metaverse.
● Companionship
● Entertainment
● Personalisation
● Education
● Social Interaction
The above advantages act as an important factor while considering owning pets in the metaverse.
How does one own a pet in the metaverse?
Several platforms have launched pets or pets related games in metaverse that allow one to participate.
In 2023, a social metaverse platform Habytat launched AI-powered pets for users. These platforms allowed users to vote on animal breeds and choose their pets. AI plays a significant role to help users bond with their pets.
Secondly, Digital Pets Company, based in Israel brought their AI-driven 3D dogs to the virtual world using extended reality in the same year, AI and blockchain technologies. These pets can autonomously learn, interpret and interact with their owners just like they do in real life. Not only that, one can train as well as “breed” their AI-driven virtual dog.
How can you breed dogs in the metaverse?
One can easily breed a dog in the metaverse. For doing this, you need to buy virtual test tubes with embryos. The embryos are later developed in an incubator. You can then design the embryos in the virtual lab by deciding several traits as per your wish. This way, the embryos will turn into puppies, and you can train them.
Simultaneously, PetPlate, a dog food brand launched a metaverse site in the year 2022. The PetPlate Park resembles a dog park and aims to develop culture and community among pets and their owners. The virtual dog park game involves finding PetPlate products to give to computer-generated dogs to win prizes such as branded wearables, NFT collectibles of your own dog and discounted products.
Another platform is pet food brand pedigree. In 2023, the brand brought furry friends to metaverse aiming to combat real-world pet homelessness. Fosterverse, the virtual platform, allows users to foster pets in popular metaverse platform, Decentraland. Amongst the options available to own pets, owners can choose the pet they want to adopt and can also upload avatars based on their photos to the platform.
The best part is, in case you do not own land in Decentraland, you can still interact with the virtual pets, including chatting with other users to learn more about the real-world dogs.
Sadly, over half of dogs in shelters are finding new homes these days and giving users a chance to foster pets in metaverse, the aim is that they might be more interested in adopting a dog in real life.
Pet ownership is now becoming an increasingly important part of the virtual experience. The metaverse offers virtually endless pet ownership choices, ranging from virtual pet shows to blockchain-powered pets. We may see an increase in the popularity of virtual pet ownership as more people adopt virtual reality and blockchain technology.
So next time you feel lonely in the metaverse, you can consider owning a pet.
Good Luck!
